"My spaces are based on translations of my experiences with nature and landscape. I have been working in a variety of remote places where I seek a profound dialogue with nature, on a biological and life-changing level, and also focussing on its dramatic capacity of power and catastrophe. Tracks, or records of my presence in these places, enriched me. There is an osmotic experience with space, where nature ends up as an integral part, leading me to obtain physical models of translation. I focus on the phenomenological, both physical and psychological, with a view to achieving everything that is mysterious in an essentially ambiguous and ever-changing nature."

Stella Portrait

Initially educated in Architecture, Stella Rahola Matutes demonstrates with her trajectory the multiple paths one can take from architecture, which is often associated to a specific professional profile (often stereotyped) and reduced to a bounded field of the profession. She probably does not consider the transit from her educational background to her current art project to be extraordinary at all. Because when architecture is taken as something prior to the look, it becomes an angle or a place from which to decipher everything. Thus, there are certain margins that may disappear.

The time she joined the Swiss Peter Zumthor's studio provide her with some of the key concepts that will define her work. For instance, the intrinsic craftsmanship in the construction process or assembling as the moment in which architecture reaches its full meaning. With a line of work strongly related to research, Rahola Matutes wonders herself about the way in which a specific material and form meet themselves in a single object. How to manipulate material to achieve a certain shape?, How to decipher the unity contained in objects? Or, in other words, How to make that, from an object, one can understand the meaning of a specific material in a specific form?
